Our career coaches at Argus Solutions review thousands of resumes each year. The same mistakes appear again and again — and most of them are entirely avoidable. If you're sending out applications and not hearing back, your resume is probably the reason.
Mistake 1: A Generic Objective Statement
"Seeking a challenging role in a reputed organization where I can utilise my skills." This statement appears on roughly 60% of the resumes we see. It tells the reader nothing. Replace it with a two-line professional summary that names your specialisation, years of experience, and the value you bring.
Mistake 2: Responsibilities Instead of Achievements
Most resumes list job duties: "Responsible for managing a team of 8 engineers." Hiring managers aren't interested in what you were responsible for — they want to know what you achieved. Rewrite every bullet as an outcome: "Led a team of 8 engineers to deliver a ₹4 crore project 3 weeks ahead of schedule."
"Numbers transform a resume. If you can quantify an achievement — revenue generated, costs saved, team size managed, time saved — you should."
Mistake 3: Poor Formatting for ATS
Most large companies use Applicant Tracking Systems to screen resumes before a human sees them. Fancy formatting — tables, text boxes, graphics, columns — often breaks ATS parsing. Use a clean single-column format with standard fonts.
Mistake 4: One Resume for All Applications
A resume is not a biography — it's a sales document targeted at a specific role. Tailoring your resume to each application takes 20 minutes and dramatically improves your callback rate.
Quick Checklist Before You Send
- Does every role have at least one quantified achievement?
- Is your contact information current, including a professional email?
- Is the resume under 2 pages if you have under 15 years of experience?
- Have you removed photos, date of birth, and marital status?
